Qualcomm’s PickNik Agreement Puts Open Motion Planning in Focus
Research discussion. Publication labels reflect the editorial record. Clinical results, hardware performance and regulatory claims require supporting primary evidence; this page does not establish independent clinical validation or safety certification.
## The announcement
Qualcomm announced an agreement to acquire PickNik on 23 September 2026. In a same-day account, PickNik founder Dave Coleman describes the importance of bringing robot software closer to the compute on which it runs. We refer to the announced agreement and do not assert that the transaction has completed. [Read PickNik’s account](https://picknik.ai/2026/09/23/Fifteen-Years-of-MoveIt-and-the-Next-Fifteen.html).
Coleman says MoveIt 1 and MoveIt 2 will retain their existing open-source licensing, community-driven roadmaps and hardware-agnostic approach. He also describes a hybrid architecture combining learned models with established motion-planning methods. These are the company’s stated commitments, rather than a guarantee of every future integration outcome.
## Editorial analysis: openness needs practical checks
For engineering teams, an open licence is one part of portability. Supported robot drivers, reproducible builds, dependency maintenance and access to diagnostic data also affect whether an application can move between platforms.
A pilot evaluation should separate task reasoning, trajectory planning and low-level control. Test the interfaces between them, particularly when perception is uncertain or a planned movement becomes invalid. Better integration may simplify development, but any claim about latency, reliability or safety needs workload-specific evidence.
## What to watch next
Follow official transaction updates, software release notes and demonstrated hardware support. Procurement decisions should use released capabilities and documented support arrangements rather than anticipated roadmap benefits.
