AI-Defined Fabs: NVIDIA Expands Tools for Chip Simulation and Inspection

## The development
NVIDIA announced an expanded semiconductor engineering portfolio on 14 October, covering materials simulation, chip inspection and factory automation. The update describes adoption of its accelerated computing tools by companies including Applied Materials, Cadence, KLA, Lam Research, Siemens and Synopsys.
Its new cuPotential library is intended to accelerate calculations of atomic and molecular interactions. NVIDIA says developers can connect these capabilities to AI agents that run and evaluate simulations.
## From simulation to factory workflows
The announcement also covers NanoVDB for three-dimensional simulation data and NPP for image processing. Other examples include digital twins for production layouts and AI tools for analysing inspection and test data.
Availability varies across the portfolio. cuPotential is in early access; NanoVDB is open source; NPP is available through the CUDA Toolkit. Lam Research’s NanoVDB-accelerated SEMulator3D capability is targeted for release by the end of 2026.
## Editorial perspective
Faster individual calculations are useful only when they improve the wider engineering process. A practical assessment should include preparation time, solver accuracy, data transfer and the time an engineer spends checking the result.
For inspection systems, measure false alarms and missed defects against an agreed reference set. For simulation, compare predictions with physical measurements under relevant process conditions. Keep evaluation data separate from the data used to tune a model.
The most useful progress is a workflow that engineers can reproduce and audit. Published speedups can guide investigation, but their hardware, baselines and test conditions must match the question a manufacturing team is trying to answer.
